UNDERGROUND ARTICLES Combat Arts as the Ultimate Sport By Greg Mihovich Everybody trains in Combat Arts, like Muay Thai and Judo for different reasons. The reasons might change as the time goes along. When I was a teenager it was important to me to gain self confidence and the ability to protect myself in frequent street confrontations on the mean streets of Russia. Plus it was cool and exiting to practice all these punches, throws and submissions I saw in the movies! As I grew older and more mature, I saw in Combat Arts a great vehicle for continuous and never-ending self-improvement and self-discovery. You always learn something, always have to find new ways and better the old ones. Also, it’s a great way to get friends, as there is no better way to bond with somebody, than to work hard, sweat and bleed alongside with him on the road to perfection! Now, as I have been a Fitness Professional for the last five years, and consider myself, among other things, a biomechanist – a human movement engineer if you wish, Combat Arts attract me from a standpoint of studying the unlimited potential, possibilities and practical applications of human movement. In combat every situation is unique and demands a beautiful blend of mental concentration, spiritual confidence, technical expertise and physical ability. And all of it applied in real time under adrenaline pressure against another human (or humans) who are trying to accomplish similar objectives! It is the ultimate playground (yes, it is a lot of fun!) for a development of a complete individual. It is also a great workout blended with technical practice, which means that you are not counting reps but having fun, while getting into great shape. In Muay Thai, for example, you spend countless rounds kicking, kneeing, punching, elbowing and grappling against the resistance of the bags, pads and your partners, while in Judo you basically squat, lunge, twist, pull and deadlift your partner’s bodyweight the whole training session! No training session on a treadmill or, god forbid, machines comes even close! My point is: whatever your reasons are, if you want to learn a valuable skill, get confident, get in great shape and have fun or meet new friends come to the Underground Gym to get some world-class training in Combat Arts! If you leave far, find a place to train and do it! You have nothing to lose, except for some excess body fat and much to gain!
